Remembering Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel Garcia MarquezGabriel García Márquez, the best-known author of the Boom generation of Latin American Authors died Thursday. García M´rquez was well known for his use of magical realism and incorporating Latin American history and politics in to his novels and short stories. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1982.

International Games Day Event!

Miami University Libraries will be a host site for the American Library Association's 6th Annual International Games Day event on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 4 to 8 p.m. The event will take place in the Center for Digital Scholarship, located on the third floor of King Library.
We will have a wide array of video games and board games available to play, along with fun giveaways and a chance to win prizes*. There will also be free pizza, drinks, and snacks provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

All are welcome - Come for the chance to try out new games, play old favorites, or just to enjoy friendly competition and free food!

Remembering Oscar Hijuelos

Oscar Hijuelos, Pulitzer Prize award winning author, died Saturday, October 12. Hijuelos was the first Latino author to be awarded the prize in 1990 for his novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love .
He wrote seven other novels and a memoir, Thoughts Without Cigarettes.

Nobel Prize for Literature awarded to Mario Vargas Llosa

The Nobel prize for literature has been awarded to Mario Vargas Llosa "for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".
Vargas Llosa, a peruvian and part of what has been called the “Boom” generation of writers from Latin America, is a prolific author of novels, essays and plays. He has also been involved in Peruvian politics, unsuccessfully running for president.
