Summary: Documents the story of Maya women of Guatemala and their role in the human rights struggle. Focuses on three women whose lives have been shattered by Guatemala's genocidal civil war
Summary: The story of Maya women of Guatemala and their role in the human rights struggle is presented in this documentary. A 36-year-long civil war in Guatemala has left over 150,000 people dead. Most of these victims are Maya. One million others have been displaced from their ancestral lands. The film takes us into the communities of three women whose lives were shattered by the genocidal war. Adela, a widow, bravely sustains her refugee family. Justina tirelessly travels the countryside explaining the human rights movement. And Francesca, a Maya priestess, reaffirms the cultural identity of her people. Beautiful photography evoking the Maya Popul Vuh Creation Story punctuate this moving celebration of these courageous women. (Maryknoll World Productions, 1998.)
