A modified book, created as a safe or hiding place for valuables. The text after p. 22 has been hollowed out and the compartment lined with marbled paper. The edges of the book were left intact, so that the alteration is not apparent when the book is closed. Bound in original brown leather armorial binding, with French royal coat of arms on front and back covers. Ms. signature on front free endpaper: "[Ve?] Carpentier ..."
